Like so many peonies from Prof. A.P. Saunders, also ‘Requiem’ is a real piece of art. Strong hybrid vigour and great substance provide for waxy blooms, very dark green, glossy and healthy foliage and an excellent plant habit. The flowers are of the single type, even though the stamens are not very typical because they come very close to being staminodes (the first phase of petal transformation). These have a very striking golden yellow colour and enclose fiery red stigmas. At opening the guard petals are still blush pink but usually quickly turn white. In cooler spring the blush lasts longer.
Sensitivity for late spring frosts needs to be noted, the stamens can get black tips then. When ‘Requiem’ is happy on her planting site she will easily and gratefully demonstrate this by forming a huge clump at maturity with more than thirty blooms being no exception. Very decorative from early spring emergence right until die back in fall.
