A rarely offered, magnificent peony with great historic value, and still is much sought after as a breeding plant. The pollen of this type of F2-hybrids is very powerful and also seed setting comes easy and in abundance. Of course, not only the excellent fertility by itself is the reason that ‘Archangel’ is a wanted peony for breeding. The immaculate white and well-formed blooms, the very early blooming and the downright impressive bush draw all that attention naturally. Because also as a garden subject, this peony is a real masterpiece. It starts already with the emerging of the fat shoots, which quickly elongate and stand on their tall dark red legs showing off their buds so firmly. Very thick stems emerge on a respectful distance from eachother, so you will need to reserve enough space: 1.5 m2 (16 sq.ft.) is not an ambitious assumption to keep in mind at planting for a mature specimen. This area will be fully covered with very luxurious and glossy, dark green foliage which will reap admiration until the end of summer. When people talk about “fine substance” in peonies, ‘Archangel’ may well be considered a point of reference!
